A Day at the Races

Last Saturday, my friend gave me a complimentary pass to the races at Kranji…. i was hosted to lunch & tea in the Committee Box at the turf club.  — my first time there!

I’ve been to the old Bukit Timah turf club, but never to the new Kranji one.. heard dat it opened 8 years ago, but this is my first time there… very “swa-koo” of me, rite?  haha..

Anyway, being the executive vip box, dress code was formal (long sleeves & tie for gents, formal for ladies).

The lunch buffet was exquisite - nothing really expensive like lobsters or abalone lah, but fairly good.  - Beef rendang, peranakan style lemak vege curry, coconut rice, deep fried fish, chicken….etc.  The dessert (”Or-nee”) was super yummy!!

And mid way thru the races, at 4.15pm, tea time was served — local fried cha kway, muar chee, and sweet cakes.. oishi des ne!

Where we were seated, large LCD screens were mounted overhead, at almost every angle and corner.  These showed the dividends on the horses for the next race.  During a race itself, the screens also beamed the action live from the tracks.

My host, Ms Mo Ching, also gave us a conducted tour of the premises.  We were shown the weighing room where jockeys weighed themselves before and after a race, the owners’ lounge, the Hibiscus lounge, the Gold Card members’ room, and the parade ring..etc.  It’s a pity she didn’t bring us to the paddocks and stables.  I would have liked to have a “behind the scene” look at the preparation work.

turfclub5.jpg The parade ring

We then went to the outdoor grandstand and sat among the spectators for a while,.. it was a lively mob actually… and when the field of horses neared the finishing line, we could hear the jockeys cracking their whips on the horses’ buttocks like there’s no tomorrow… as the leading horses  strained their necks trying to pip one another to the fnishing post, while the rabid crowd cheered and shouted aloud the number of the horses they had backed..

turfclub3.jpg Front horses surging across the finishing line

As the front two neck-to-neck horses scrambled to the finishing line, we could hear the crowd’s final last gasp shout and a concerted split-second stamping of the feet at the final moment when built-in cameras at the post clicked away for a nail-biting photo finish!

It was really exciting.

For the day, we were given a booklet with the race card and horses’ track record.  What amazed me, though, was that our host, Ms Mo Ching, suggested that we could pick a horse based on our favourite number.  For ladies, she recommended picking the jockey’s attire that one liked best.  Now, everyone knows that you don’t choose horses like that.  It’s financial suicide.

Anyway, of cos i didn’t take her advice.  i picked my own horses after studying the track record in the booklet.  There were 9 races that day, including the highlight, the Chairman’s Trophy Event.  I had bet on 6 of the races that day – I won 5 of them, and lost 1.

If i had bet based on how colourful a jockey’s attire was, i would have gone home broke!  haha…

Anyway, it was a great afternoon at the races, and i am grateful to Singapore Turf Club and my hosts, for their invitation.  i’ll certainly like to go back again, cos it was so enjoyable!  : )

And I drew the picture.
I am not happy with it.
The shading, the hair is not well done due to hasty work

Photobucket
Took 4 hours.
Pardon about the lightness. I used 2B pencil and I was afraid of drawing the hair. So I drew lightly just in case. Havent got the gut to darken it.

took the time to draw during the hols. =)
Work in progress:
Photobucket

Took about 3 hours.

Ref from seventeen magazine feb 2008 coverpage =)

Hayden panettiere.

Sorry about the lightness. I used only 2B pencil. I drew and stop at the hair cos I wanna take the time to draw the hair properly. To be honest, I feel like stopping here and shade the face darker, leaving the hair out. It is so diffcult to draw, cos her hair is sort of been blown by wind. Hope you understand what I’m trying to say.

Advices and comments are welcome =)

How to make a swivel card

Want to learn how to make a card that can turn 180 degrees in the middle??
I am gonna teach you guys how to do it, and you can make them for your friends and family without having to buy ready-made cards. By making on your own, you are adding a part of yourself to it and as a result, it will be special because you make it =)
Please feel free to use these instructions to make your swivel card. You are free to link to this page from any forum etc if you wish. Please do NOT copy this information and/or photos to use for your own classes/forums/webpages without permission. Please also note that I’m not claiming that I have invented the swivel card, but these simple step-by-step instructions and photos are mine.

Please click on the picture to get a better view

First, get a cardstock of your desired color. I mostly will get a cardstock that has a silvery kind of colour instead of a plain cardstock as it will be easier to design and decorate the card. Patterned card stock is also recommended. And it is good to get a self healing cutting mat. Save the trouble of having to measure by yourself. If you don’t have one, get a thick newspaper underneath your cardstock and make careful when cutting your card.
Dotted lines: Fold along the line
Clear lines: Cut along the line
Measurements can vary to your own desire on how big you want. I mostly used that measurements shown in the picture for my cards.
Draw out the template using a very light pencil:
a B pencil is recommended as it is soft. HB pencil is also acceptable but make sure you dun apply much pressure to it.Them cut the lines according to the template shown above:

For this, I used a craft knife. If you do not have it, penknife will do. But cutting out shapes, craft knife will be strongly recommended.

Fold alone the dotted lines. Now, take note that both of the dotted lines is to be folded in opposite direction. NOT IN SAME DIRECTION.
Like this:
Then turn the card over to fold other side in opposite direction.
You will get this:
Now you can make your own card by adding your own design! =)My own design:

ID : #0012

SGD $8.00

This card is currently not avaliable.

The drawings is done by myself from reference pictures using 03 Pilot drawing pen.
Colour using faber-castell water-soluable color pencils.

Sneak peek:

The flowers is made by myself. Simple to make.

Just cut out the shape using foam paper and then sitched the border:

You can even make the middle into a different shape other than a rectangle.

This card is done on the theme, autumn leaves. which I done for my friend who order for her colleague.

(Sold. Order is also not avaliable)

Another design which I experimented :

It is the same format as the first one but in different design. The middle which is empty is for personalized message.

Seems fun right?

Enjoy making the swivel card for your friends and family! =D

Omg. I actually like playing facebook.
Starting I hate it, because I find it troublesome.
But now alright.
I’ll only focus on 1 application , which is parking wars.
Checked it like twice a day.
Hoping I’m not fined.
And hoping to fine someone.
Mine score is reaching $100,000.
Guess there’s no ending to the game.
So I shall delete it when I reach the target.
And add something else.

My annual pilgrimage

Annually, I would take my pilgrimage to Singapore softball’s hottest event, which used to be called the SRC games. It was held annually at the Singapore Recreational Club till they decided to shift it to a cheaper venue - the Kallang Baseball Diamond. This event happens every year during the weekends of primary / secondary / JC March holidays.

Every year, all the softballers in Singapore would gather at the Singapore Recreational Club to play a series of friendly matches in the spirit of softball, although certain rivalries ensured certain matches weren’t so friendly. I still remember the days of RJC vs HCJC (it was still called HCJC in those days), where the rivalry and history was so strong almost every enthusiastic softball took sides.

All matches were played in a round-robin series and RJC vs HCJC would always be the last match of the SRC games - the finals. And every enthusiastic player would be cheering on either team. Although in my opinion, RJC was the more arrogant team, it was HCJC who had more wins against RJC. They both were really good teams and I had the opportunity to join either JC for softball training after my prelims. Well, I made a decision at that time and the first 3 months were definitely the best years of my life as a softballer, being able to play with the best players of my age in Singapore.

It’s been years since I last touched a softball / baseball, and I think my leather glove has grown mushrooms in my cupboard, but my enthusiasm for softball will never die.

I can’t wait till March 2008!
