DRAWING DAY 2008

Drawing Day will be on June 7, 2008. , where we share our artwork with the rest of the world.

I know most of you may not have heard of it. So here’s an explanation of it adapted from the website:

One day a year, the world stops to remember that joy we had when we first picked up a pencil and created our first piece of art - that’s what Drawing Day is all about. The goal for Drawing Day is simple - to create enough drawings to make some noise worldwide for the sake of art. 2008 is the first year of this initiative. Our goal is definitely a long-shot, but we’re aiming for 1 million drawings worldwide. We have no precise measure to know if we reach this goal. If we come close we will all definitely know. Even if we reach 10% of our goal in the first year of this initiative, it will be a great achievement but we will continue aiming for the magic million.

There are many ways you can draw.
Or you can also be one of their supportors and help promote it.

Visit Drawingday.org to find out. =)

A Day at the Races

Last Saturday, my friend gave me a complimentary pass to the races at Kranji…. i was hosted to lunch & tea in the Committee Box at the turf club.  — my first time there!

I’ve been to the old Bukit Timah turf club, but never to the new Kranji one.. heard dat it opened 8 years ago, but this is my first time there… very “swa-koo” of me, rite?  haha..

Anyway, being the executive vip box, dress code was formal (long sleeves & tie for gents, formal for ladies).

The lunch buffet was exquisite - nothing really expensive like lobsters or abalone lah, but fairly good.  - Beef rendang, peranakan style lemak vege curry, coconut rice, deep fried fish, chicken….etc.  The dessert (”Or-nee”) was super yummy!!

And mid way thru the races, at 4.15pm, tea time was served — local fried cha kway, muar chee, and sweet cakes.. oishi des ne!

Where we were seated, large LCD screens were mounted overhead, at almost every angle and corner.  These showed the dividends on the horses for the next race.  During a race itself, the screens also beamed the action live from the tracks.

My host, Ms Mo Ching, also gave us a conducted tour of the premises.  We were shown the weighing room where jockeys weighed themselves before and after a race, the owners’ lounge, the Hibiscus lounge, the Gold Card members’ room, and the parade ring..etc.  It’s a pity she didn’t bring us to the paddocks and stables.  I would have liked to have a “behind the scene” look at the preparation work.

We then went to the outdoor grandstand and sat among the spectators for a while,.. it was a lively mob actually… and when the field of horses neared the finishing line, we could hear the jockeys cracking their whips on the horses’ buttocks like there’s no tomorrow… as the leading horses  strained their necks trying to pip one another to the fnishing post, while the rabid crowd cheered and shouted aloud the number of the horses they had backed..

turfclub3.jpg Front horses surging across the finishing line

As the front two neck-to-neck horses scrambled to the finishing line, we could hear the crowd’s final last gasp shout and a concerted split-second stamping of the feet at the final moment when built-in cameras at the post clicked away for a nail-biting photo finish!

It was really exciting.

For the day, we were given a booklet with the race card and horses’ track record.  What amazed me, though, was that our host, Ms Mo Ching, suggested that we could pick a horse based on our favourite number.  For ladies, she recommended picking the jockey’s attire that one liked best.  Now, everyone knows that you don’t choose horses like that.  It’s financial suicide.

Anyway, of cos i didn’t take her advice.  i picked my own horses after studying the track record in the booklet.  There were 9 races that day, including the highlight, the Chairman’s Trophy Event.  I had bet on 6 of the races that day – I won 5 of them, and lost 1.

If i had bet based on how colourful a jockey’s attire was, i would have gone home broke!  haha…

Anyway, it was a great afternoon at the races, and i am grateful to Singapore Turf Club and my hosts, for their invitation.  i’ll certainly like to go back again, cos it was so enjoyable!  : )

“Tea Session on NUS Scholarships and Courses

Congratulations on your outstanding achievements in the polytechnic! We would like to invite you for a tea session on the scholarships and courses offered at NUS

blah blah blah”

This came by mail about a week ago and I’ve been excited ever since. The tea sessions will be held later at 3.45pm. NTU didn’t have such an event although they did have a series of talks at the Suntec Convention hall on Saturday. But I feel that going down to the school is better as we would be able to get a feel of the surroundings and studying environment.

Take NTU for example, I’ve been on a bus around the campus before noticed the hostel area looks quite unsightly… with clothes / undergarments being hung out to dry and people walking around in boxers and all that.

Well anyway the application for NUS has begun already, and will last through 20th February. Good luck for those who want to apply

Night in RP

I had a hectic day yesterday. So hectic to the point that my shoulders are aching today and my back is hurting.

Well anyway in the morning, I had to rush down to Jurong West to meet my partner to evaluate a property there. It’s at Jurong West Street 95, near NTU and City Harvest Church. We spent half the day there before heading down to 95 Tampines Road, which is just a stone’s throw away from Kovan MRT station to evaluate another property. And along the way we grabbed something to eat in the car. Well anyway, evaluating property isn’t an easy or simple job. We had to walk rounds around the area, sit around to see the crowds etc to get a feel of the place.

After those 2, I had to go down to Eunos to meet my mentor for a meeting till about 8pm, before rushing down to Toa Payoh to pass my client’s goods to him. Then after that, while on the way home, my god-sister asked if I was available to fetch her from home to school for a camp. By that time, I was already reaching home. So I rounded back to Toa Payoh to fetch her all the way to Woodlands, to RP.

I must say, RP seems to be a waste of space… everything there seems too huge to be practical, and even my god-sister agrees. But anyway we finally found the campsite after driving around in the park. Yes, driving around in the park. I was so exhausted from running around the entire day that I entered the carpark, and turned down the path that led into the park. So the park, which was meant for human traffic, had a car cruising down it last night.

Everyone at the campsite was stunned to see a car driving towards them. And after we alighted, my sister introduced me to her friends, who were all still stunned to see a car in the park. I ate some barbecued food before deciding it was time to leave. After I left my god-sister there, I then headed home, again.
