The day we will run out of “Days”

i find it strange (and ridiculous!) how people are assigning a special “Day” to commenorate anything from occpuations to diseases, and now, in fact, any trendy topic is given a “Day” of its own!!

Haven’t we already have enough of man-made festivals / events to observe?  Father’s Day and Mother’s Day are fine.   So are Teachers’ Day and Youth Day.  Of cousre, Valentine’s Day is recognised and celebrated worldwide.  But we started having Bosses’ Day, Secretaries’ Day, Lawyers’ Day… and soon, unbelievably, even Postman’s Day and Chef’s Day

I have nothing against these occupations.  Every job is a professional and respectable occupation.

But I cannot understand why they should assign a special “Day” to every occupation?  If every occupation is going to have it’s own “Day”, then we will run out of days per year to celebrate.

Now, even illnesses have their day in the sun.  We have TB dayDiabetes Day and even Eye Glaucoma Day!!  Please, there are thousands of diseases in the world, how can we finish assigning a “Day” to every one of them??  (By the way, how come there’s no SARS Day?)

Next we have hot topics that also get their own “Day”.  There is already Human Rights DayInternational Left Handers Day, Health Day, and even Intellectual Property Rights Day.

Seems like we have a ridiculous habit of coining a special “Day” for any and every trendy “flavour-of-the-month” topic!  We have an Earth Day, everyone knows that.  It’s part of the environmental drive to save the earth.  OK, we’ll accept that.

But in a sign that we are indeed running out of “Days” to assign to some event or topic (without overlapping and using the same day twice), we have now zeroed in on the HOUR !!

The world ridiculously observed an “Earth Hour” two saturdays ago.. on 29 March 2008.

So paranoid “Day-coining” folks are celebrating the fact that they now have 24 times the number of days to assign to some silly topic, occupation or what not.  (24 X 365 days = 8,760).

In a day, the foolish will have 24 hours to celebrate, or do what not.  But in just one hour????  What can they possibly do in one hour?

How much electricity can we save in just one hour?  Even if the whole world shut off all power for 1 hour per year, it’s only for one hour.  And it’s only once per year.   That’s 0.01% of annual electricity consumption!! – It ain’t going to bring oil prices down.  And it ain’t gonna make any difference.  It’s just so stupid.

Let’s STOP this silly assigning of Days (now, hours) to every damn topic or issue that exists in the world.

Do you know that even if saving that one hour of electricity doesn’t help much, but the greater purpose is that people know that they can do a part to help save the Earth and are WILLING to do so. Even though each household only shut off the electricity 1 hour per year, it still helps. There are so many households in the world that uses electricity everyday. By doing such a tiny act, you can help save Earth, why not? and it does not necessarily mean shutting down of electricity equals oil price go down. the electricity we use doesn’t necessarily come from burning fuels. there are other alternatives too. And doing your part for Earth is not stupid at all, instead, it is a smart act. YOU are living on Earth, aren’t you? If you answer no, then no problem, you have no responsibility to care about Earth. But now you are living on Earth right? If you are living on Earth and the Earth is facing its troubles, shouldn’t you help too? Thus it is everyone’s responsibility to help save Earth. I want to stress that every individual play a part, no matter what they do to try help save Earth, even if it is just simply by using you own canvas bags instead of plastic bags, or switching off the lights when not in used. All these small acts contributes, and in the end, it will come together to become a big mountain of things that we have done to help save Earth. Therefore, if you are living on Earth, you are in no position to reject saving Earth.

It is true that we will not be able to make any difference just by switching off all lights in the house for one hour per year.

In the first place, not many countries observe this 1-hour blackout. And within those countries that do, not many citizens observe it either. And in a single home, not every member of the family observes it either.

Secondly, they switch off all the lights in the house, but they continue watching TV during that 1 hour. Isn’t that silly? Doesn’t that contracdict the spirit behind the idea then? Yes, it was reported in the newspapers — this family actually sat together watching Tv in darkeness, and they were so proud to be supporting the movement. I was shocked that they even dared to delcare that the support the movement, and had their photo taken and published whatsmore!

Thirdly, if you really want to conserve energy, for the sake of the environment, you should be targeting the industries and the factories — these are the real source of pollution. And these are the real energy guzzlers. Not the residential households!
