Shenzhen Airlines said passengers will soon be able to use their mobile phones and connect to the Internet during flights. this service is provided from OnAir( a swiss firm), on air said that this will allow travellers to call and send text messages from their mobile phones and access the Internet on laptops during flights.(cool rite, but will it occur that it will interupt the instrument on the planes?? )

The company said it aimed to set up the service on the airline, which is based in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, by mid-2009.(two more years, so long)

well i think this service shld set up abit faster so that during the beijing 2008 Olympics more ppl will be ready to try the service…

Top Tricks for Safe, Smart Downloads

Problem: I download lots of free software, but I’m worried about picking up adware. What do you suggest?

The Fix: Fire up your standard defensive shields (firewall, antivirus, and antispyware); then add an extra coat of armor. I recommend giving Cyberhawk Basic a try. Unlike antivirus software that checks for virus signaA-tures, Cyberhawk watches for and blocks suspicious behavior as it occurs.

But Cyberhawk doesn’t play well with all computers, so I have two alternatives that thwart malware by running your browser, e-mail, and instant messaging apps in a protected sandbox. That way, you can end a session and easily reverse potential damage to your system. GreenBorder Pro with SafeFiles throws a border around your browser and puts downloaded files into a special folder, so that you can run them in a protected session. At $30 per year, it’s not dirt cheap, but you do get a 15-day free trial. Or try Sandboxie, a free but complicated tool that quarantines downloads and their installation routines in a sandbox until you decide they’re not harmful. Warning: Be sure to try each program separately.

Problem: I’m an avid downloader, but I hate downloading files one at a time.

The Fix: You need a download manager. FlashGet is a remarkable free tool. Click a link to download a file, or just copy the link into the clipboard, and FlashGet pops up to perform the download. Even handier: Drag and drop multiple links onto the program’s floating dropzone. The default setting can download ten files simultaneously and resumes the transfer if it’s disrupted midstream by, say, a browser or unlikely (ha!) PC crash. If you have a manager but it won’t work with Firefox, use FlashGot.

Quick Tip: Have you ever happened across a site loaded with zillions of images or videos that you wanted? Forget download managers: The tool you need is WinHTTrack Website Copier; it saves an entire Web site to your hard drive.

Problem: Is there a good way to download YouTube or Google video files?

The Fix: Many sites contain Flash-based streaming videos that are yours for the taking. Just use the Web-based toolsat KeepVid.com or VideoDownload.com. Both sites have links you can add to your browser’s toolbar to handle drag-and-drop video downloading. For multiple YouTube videos, download TubeMe. To watch the files, use VLC or FLV Player–or convert the videos into AVI files at the Online FLV Converter site.

Clear Away Clutter With WinPatrol
WinPatrol is a must-have tool: It helps keep your system tray free of clutter and warns you when a program insists on loading at system boot-up. The latest version–WinPatrol 2007–has Delayed Start, a smart feature that lets you delay launch of nonessential programs for up to an hour after the system boots, so Windows loads faster. That’s ideal timing for applications such as backup programs. Also new is a right-click function that opens the startup program’s folder in Windows Explorer. WinPatrol Plus costs $30 (and I promise you, it’s worth the money), but there’s a free version as well. Compare the two versions.

10 Fast Fixes for Nagging PC Problems
14 September, 2007, 6:07 pm
Filed under: IT / Programming / Helpdesk

1. Your Wi-Fi network is now dog-slow. If it’s not a network outage, you likely have interference. Try relocating your router to shield it from disruptions such as microwave use or calls from a cordless phone. Or you may be on a crowded channel. Change the channel via your router’s configuration page; look for a ‘Channel’ section and try 1, 6, or 11. See “How to Improve Your Wi-Fi Network’s Performance” for more ideas.

2. Your display looks terrible. Check display settings by right-clicking the desktop; choose Properties in XP or Personalize in Windows Vista, then Settings. If you can’t increase resolution and color quality, click Advanced, Adapter. If Standard VGA Adapter or another generic adapter is listed, download a driver specific to your PC (see How to Reinstall Windows XP for details on doing this). If your adapter is there, try a prior driver version. In XP, click Properties, Driver, Roll Back Driver; in Windows Vista, open the Personalization Control Panel, choose Display Settings, Advanced Settings, Properties, and click Driver, Roll Back Driver.3. Your printer is spewing out garbage. A cancelled print job may not have cleared properly from the printer’s memory. Turn the printer off for a minute, then back on. While you’re waiting, go to Start, Printers and Faxes in XP, or Start, Printers in Windows Vista, to delete anything in the print queue. If the problem continues, download and reinstall the driver.

4. Your default printer is no longer the default. Some apps, like Microsoft’s OneNote, install faux-printer-like devices as output options, and some will also unhelpfully make them the default for all print jobs. Select Start, Run, type control printers, and press <Enter>. Right-click the printer you prefer, and click Set as Default Printer.5. You see daily, consistent error messages citing memory problems. To check if bad RAM is actually the trouble, download the free MemTest86 and stick it on a boot disk; then run the full battery of tests.

6. Your PC starts up too slowly. Click Start, Run and type msconfig. Then click the Startup tab to see all of the apps that load at startup. Uncheck anything you don’t want to start at boot-up–but uncheck programs one at a time, as you need many of these apps to run your PC. (For more on pruning safely, see How to Make Windows Start Up Faster.)7. Videos play sans audio or image. Your codecs are probably out of date. Get multiple updates via a free pack such as the ACE Mega CodecS Pack or the K-Lite Codec Pack.

8. You broke a key off your keyboard. If part of the key mechanism is broken, consider scavenging an unused key (<Insert>, perhaps) and use its mechanism with your broken key (Apple’s tutorial at PowerBook G4: Keycap Replacement will walk you through the procedure–it should work for almost any keyboard). Replacement keyboards for laptops can usually be found on eBay for $40 or less; many step-by-step guides show how to do the job, such as the one for a Toshiba laptop keyboard at Laptoka.com’s page, How to remove and replace laptop keyboard yourself.

9. You bent a pin on one of your PC’s ports or cables. Using pliers will probably make things worse, but the tip of a large-diameter mechanical pencil will fit most pins. Just slip it over the bent pin to straighten it out.

10. Folders show only large icons. Change the default in Windows Explorer by setting the right view on any folder, and then click Tools, Folder Options. Click the View tab, then Apply to All Folders (Apply to Folders in Windows Vista).
