I had been rooting for Germany all the while, and i’m embarrassed that they lost 0-2 to Italy.
Home ground aside, i had thot that Germany was the most technically proficient team in the World Cup. But they didn’t play well at all against Italy, such a let down.
Any theories on why Germany lost? Is Italy really that good, or was it a pathetic German team that they beat?

The host is out killed by Alessandro Del Piero and Fabio Grosso scored two wonderful late goals to break German hearts and send Italy into the 2006. With just two minutes of extra-time remaining and the game seemingly set for a nerve-wracking penalty shootout Grosso broke the deadlock before Del Piero added the gloss to make it 2-0 with the very last kick of the game.

I think the new England captain should be steven gerrard rather than john terry, although john terry is a more favoured as the club he captains has won back to back league titles and he was the england under-21 captain as well. But having a captain in midfield makes the team more balanced both in attack and in defence. Just look at the 2 teams which dominated english football for the past decade; both the captains of Manchester united and Arsenal were midfield generals.
Even now, take a look at Liverpool, with captain marvel leading the team, they have won the champions league and FA cup in Rafa’s first 2 seasons in charge. I shall not comment on Chelsea as their team are made up of all-stars and match-winners, although I feel they’re underachieving, considering the hundreds of millions of pounds which they spent acquiring world-class players. Maybe they might do better if frank lampard became the captain? He’s pretty influential and scores his fair share of goals too.
But anyway, back to the topic, gerrard is more versatile as a player when compared to terry. At a glance, gerrard can contribute more to the team as he can be deployed in 6 different positions; all across the midfield, as a attacking midfielder behind a lone striker or as the head of the diamond formation behind 2 strikers, and as a holding midfielder in front of the defence, which ex-coach Sven plays him in. Terry is only a central defender.
Captains, besides being influential and having the ability to motivate his players while on the pitch, have to be able to carry the team and do something special. Take steven gerrard for example, if it wasn’t for his wonder goal against bayern leverkusen in the dying minutes of the match 2 seasons ago, then Liverpool wouldn’t even have made it past the group stages, and if it wasn’t for him motivating, pushing his players on the pitch, and leading by example, how could we have seen Liverpool coming back from 3 goals down to score 3 against the world-class defenders in 1 of the best teams on the planet playing in 1 of the best leagues in the world in a country famed for its defensive qualities in football? Now, those are the traits of a great captain. I have yet to see john terry do something spectacular or comparable to stevie g.
Just take a look at 4 remaining countries left in the world cup. Out of those 4 countries, 3 of the teams have captains in the middle of the park. Ballack, Zidane, Figo, for Germany, France and Portugal respectively. The Italians have always been renowned for their stingy and rock-solid defence so I guess its understandable that their captain naturally would be a defender as well. But don’t take me wrong, Cannavaro is a world-class defender and with him leading Italy, none of the countries facing them have yet to score. Even the 1 goal they’ve let in so far was scored by an Italian. But their attack has not be looking good and you definitely can’t win matches if you don’t score.
And since england is not technically gifted or strong defensively like the italians, having their leader in midfield would be ideal. Hopefully McClaren will consider carefully before choosing his captain. England does not need another Beckham, who’s way past his prime and is more of a great pretender than a great captain.
